Call for Applications for the Doctoral Study Programme in New Media Art

 

Liepaja University (Liepaja, Latvia) calls for applications to its doctoral study programme in “New Media Art". This practice-led degree is the only doctoral programme in Latvia designed for artist-researchers. The programme therefore not only includes acquirement of the base of theoretical and academic knowledge, but also the process of artistic creation in all its various forms. The course is 3-years full time (part time not possible at the moment) and the degree is ‘Doctor of Arts’.

The deadline for submitting the application form is December 10, 2017; notifications of acceptance (or non-acceptance) – January 10, 2018; submitting of the documents – by January 20, 2018.

The aim of the programme is to contribute to the development of new, advanced theories and critical analysis in the broad area of new media and interdisciplinary art, as well as the creation of new art forms and art works. Creative projects of the study programme could focus on innovation technologies, interdisciplinary art practices, sound, audiovisual media, narrative, interactivity, assistive technologies and other forms as defined by the speciality of each particular student.

The programme is based on individual, independent research and has a low-residency model of study. Mandatory face-to-face meetings of staff and students are held three times a year in the form of Colloquium Weeks, which take place in Liepaja and partner institutions elsewhere in Latvia – RISEBA premises in Riga and SERDE residential centre in Aizpute.

Individual studies and independent work can be carried out in the Art Research Laboratory premises located in the Liepaja University building (Kūrmājas prospekts 13). Laboratory premises are equipped with the necessary technical base and a media library. Students also have the opportunity to use the resources available at the New Media and Cultural Center RIXC in Riga, Lenču iela 2. The programme has budget and paid places, as well as the opportunity to apply for an Erasmus exchange in Aalto University, Finland.

The doctoral study programme “New Media Art” is a licensed academic programme of the University of Liepaja, and has been running since 2013. In the near future the doctoral study programme intends to unite with the RISEBA University for Business, Arts, and Technology. The cooperation with Aalto University in Finland will also continue and extend, as well as with the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Nida Art Colony, creating a common doctoral programme in order to offer dynamic and interesting studies.

Admission requires Application of Promotion Thesis in New Media Art (see attached) – filled application form in English that has to be sent electronically to the director of the programme Asoc. Prof. Rasa Smite, e-mail: rasa.smite@rixc.org, by the December 20, 2017.

All received applications will be judged for suitability and applicants will be notified of acceptance (or non-acceptance) by 10th January.

After receiving acceptance, documents should be submitted in mid-January, 2018 (working days)

Enrollment and payment of fees then takes place immediately and the first mandatory Colloquium Week takes place from 19th to 23rf February, 2017.
